Indiana’s Governor Eric Holcomb has set an ambitious goal to greatly reduce the State’s infant mortality rate and achieve the lowest rate among Midwestern states by 2024. To support this, Indiana HIMSS in coordination with the Family and Social Services Administration, Indiana State Department of Health, Indiana Management Performance Hub (MPH), the Regenstrief Institute, and KSM Consulting conducted a data visualization and analytics challenge hosted by Parkview Health. This is the first time in State history that such diverse organizations have joined forces to support Indiana’s OB Navigator program with the aim of improving maternal and infant health through the creation and publication of 45 publicly available datasets https://hub.mph.in.gov/dataset?tags=Datapalooza, provided by 2 State Agencies, and the Regenstrief Institute. A public call for proofs of concept using this data went out to the general public, and professional and student teams were formed to compete in the creation of data visualization and analysis solutions. Teams were judged based upon the solution’s potential for impact, creativity and innovation, and cross-disciplinary approach. Twenty teams ultimately submitted proofs of concept for the competition. These teams were narrowed down to the top 5 professional and top 5 student teams who then were invited to present at the first-ever Healthy Mom + Baby Datapalooza in Indiana. Winning teams won cash prizes totaling more than $3,000 with the potential for generating high value use cases for implementation in future efforts. By convening students, researchers, policymakers, health care professionals and entrepreneurs from across the state, the competition is propelling the exploration and analysis of Indiana’s data to deliver powerful insights and innovative support for the OB Navigator program. This roundtable will not only share key results from the top submissions, but also discuss the process for harnessing the power of data and hosing a statewide data & analytics challenge.
