The Office of Financial Management estimates that about $57 billion in improper payments occurred within Medicaid in 2019 (roughly 14.9% of all payments). The increased prominence of managed care (over 75% of Medicaid beneficiaries now receive some portion of their benefits through managed care plans) also raises important considerations on how states and managed care organizations can partner together more strongly, enabled by technology driven approaches, to ensure program integrity and combat fraud, waste, and abuse (FWA).

This panel will bring together individuals across state (Medicaid Fraud Control Unit), federal government (CPI and CMCS), and managed care to discuss approaches to combating Medicaid FWA. The panel will discuss the aspirations set on combatting FWA, current approaches, and challenges experienced today. In addition, we will explore best practises in technology driven approaches and capabilities required for the future to successfully combat FWA.
